A 5-Year-Old Tradition for a 70-Year-Old Devotion – Annual Walking Pilgrimage Recap

America’s 250th, the devotion’s 70th, and the walking pilgrimage’s 5th
2026 is a year of milestone birthdays!

On September 13th, 2026, pilgrims met at the Patroness of America Center for a well-loved tradition: the Walking Pilgrimage. Over 200 pilgrims joined throughout the day. Some walked over 7 miles, others opted for a shorter walk, and still others remained at the Oratory in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. There were babies in strollers, grandparents, and all ages in between who came out to walk with Our Lady. We were also blessed to have three local priests join us and lead us.

This pilgrimage was born five years ago as they built the Fishingline Trail that connected Kendallville to Rome City. Father J Steele, the pastor of Immaculate Conception in Kendallville recognized that the trail ended right at the Center. Plans were made to have the walk in September to honor the anniversary of the devotion, and hopefully catch some good weather.

We’ve had some years with quite hot weather, but this year concluded with some cool weather! We prayed it wouldn’t be too hot, but no one prayed it wouldn’t be too cold! The overcast weather and breeze were a nice relief for pilgrims who walked a long journey.

The walk concludes very peacefully in the Oratory of the Holy Family with a brief moment of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, more hymns, and Benediction. Pilgrims are also given a flower when entering the oratory, which they present to Our Lady at the conclusion of Adoration.

Following the walk, Adoration, and the presentation of the flowers, another highlight of the day occurs: suppertime! This year, we had hamburgers and hot dogs from Didier Meats that were prepared by the Saint Gaspar Knights of Columbus. There were also chips, fruit, snack bars, and cookies. No one left hungry! Everyone was able to enjoy a free meal and great fellowship after many hours of walking, praying, and singing.

Our numbers continue to grow and we hope to see even more next year, walking with her as she leads us to Him.
